Here is a list of some John Deere plow beam numbers and the models to which they correspond. This is meant to be a helpful guide. I have pictures of most of the tractor drawn plows but do NOT have pictures for horse drawn sulky or walking plows. The below list is borrowed (with a few extra items) from Mr. Thinker's John Deere Almanac 1st Edition; Visit GreenMagazine.com
** SB = Short Beam CB= Center Beam LB = Long Beam **
As a general rule Gang plows were 2+ bottoms and were meant to be drawn by a traction engine. Sulkies and plows with names like Bantam were horse drawn.
Middle breakers and listers are plows with which a furrow or trench is created by a lister bottom. The crop would be planted either in furrow or on top of the ridge depending on cropping practice. They look like two plow bottoms (left and right) put together to throw soil both left and right at the same time.
